What is X10

X10 Cameras are becoming very popular for several reasons. But what is X10?

X10 is a communications language that allows compatible products to talk to each other using the existing electrical wiring in the home.

Most X10 compatible products are very affordable and the fact that they talk over existing wires in your home means that no costly rewiring is necessary.

X10 is Simple

Press a button on the transmitter and the signal is sent over the home’s wiring to a receiver.

In the past, if you wanted to be able to control certain lights and appliances from one location, you would have to run hundreds of feet of wire to route the power switches of each device to one location.

Using X10 modules, you don’t have to do this, since the X10 House/Unit codes and commands are transmitted over your existing house wiring.

X10 devices can be categorized into 3 distinct groups:

  1. Transmitters
  2. Receivers
  3. Transmitter/Receivers (2 way devices)

X10 communicates between transmitters and receivers by sending and receiving signals over the power line wiring. These signals involve short RF bursts which represent digital information.

Using simple dials or buttons you assign each product with one of up to 256 addresses.

If you want more than one device to respond to the same signal, simply set them to the same addresses.

All X10 compatible products can be freely mixed and matched.

It is estimated that X10 compatible products can be found in over 10 million American homes.

Advantages

  • Inexpensive
  • No new wiring is required
  • Simple to install
  • Hundred’s of compatible products
  • Control up to 256 lights and appliances
  • Time proven, this technology has been around for over 20 years.

How to avoid problems?

Most of the time, X10 products works without any problems. However, because they talk over your home’s electrical wires they may have difficulties in two situations.

The first is when there is an appliance running that generates “noise” onto the power lines.

Appliances that may cause problems are motors (e.g. dryer, treadmill, vacuum cleaner, etc.) and advanced electronics (e.g. switching power supplies on some laptops, some big screen TV’s, etc.).

The good news is that all you need to do is plug the appliance into a noise filter.

Quality X10 noise filter are sold for $20 or less.

The second situation is when your X10 transmitter is on one side (phase) of your home’s electrical wiring and the receiver is on the other side.

Many times the signal either bridges the two phases at the transformer at the street or via some 220V appliance in the home. When this doesn’t happen, a simple plug-in phase coupler called SignaLinc will solve this problem.

What devices are known to interfere with X10 commands?

There are many devices in most homes, which interfere with the X10 signal, preventing it from getting to its destination.

Some have circuits which eliminate noise (conditioners). These circuits absorb the X10 signal, making it weaker throughout the house. Other devices put noise on the power line making it difficult for the signal to be heard.

The following lists of devices are likely to interfere with X10 signals:

  • Televisions
  • Computers: Clone-type computers seem to be more of a problem than name brands
  • Computer monitors: No-name brands are bigger problems than big name brands
  • Laptop computer power supplies: NEC is a known problem
  • Ozone/Air ionizers and filters
  • Game Systems: Nintendo, X-Box, PlayStation, etc.
  • Audio/Video components: Satellite receivers, CD players, VCRs, DVD players, Cable boxes, Tape Decks, TIVOs, AV Receivers MIDI musical instruments Synthesizers, Electronic pianos, Drum machines, Mixers, Reverbs, etc.
  • Fax machines
  • Surge-protection power strips, UPS’s, and Power Conditioners.
  • Noisemakers (Devices that actually put out electrical noise onto the electrical line)
  • Transformers: Motors: Refrigerator, heating systems, pumps, attic fans, treadmills
  • Microwave Ovens
  • Fluorescent-based lighting and ballast transformersCell phone chargers, Toothbrush chargers, Razors, etc.

Importance of Noise Filter

X10 technology is simple, inexpensive, and compatible with almost everything.

But because it is using the same power source of electronic appliances like cordless phone, computer, computer monitor, television, satellite, dryer, electric toothbrush it is important that you spend a few extra dollars on noise filters for these electronic devices.

The reason to get noise filter is because X10 signal looks like electrical noise and quality power supplies used by computer for example, will destroy the X10 signal!

Learn Your Online Casino Lingo

Online casino can be coined as the new hobby for those who don’t want to get out of their home and play sports in the field or stadium. Thank technology for bringing this innovation, it had given gamblers and even non-gamblers a chance to bring the casino in the comforts of their living room. The popularity of online casinos have been around the world and people from different nations are very fond of the online casino games.

Having this popularity, there had been some micro-innovations that online casino players around the world had developed over the times. They have invented new terms to substitute some of the usual casino words that most gamblers use. These casino lingoes are supposed to make the gamblers look cool or can even be a strategy if you’re playing with the newbies who didn’t have any idea of the terms.

First example is the bone which actually means the dice. Instead of saying role the dice, you can now say it as role the bone! This is a term that, more often than not, younger gamblers had invented. The word bill also has a new meaning now. It actually means a hundred dollar bill. So if someone bets a bill, you know that he’s not betting just a dollar. Being aware of this term can actually help you when playing casino games the require you to be sensitive with what your competitors are doing and saying. Progressive is another term that casino players are using recently. Progressive games are casino games where the jackpot keeps on growing until such time that some lucky player wins the pot of money that was accumulated from each play.

You may hear the word fill when you’re playing slots or in poker tables. Fill actually means replenishment. When more chips are brought to a table game, a player is actually filling. When a slot machine’s hopper needs to be replenished with coins, it is also called filling.

In an actual casino, if you heard the word pit you must beware. The pit is an area in a casino that is off-limits to the casino players. It is where the boss of supervises and monitors all that is happening on the floor, meaning the gaming area. You don’t want to be lost in the pit because the pit boss will think that you have some bad intentions and will just bring you trouble.

Gaming is for games in general and is a newer term for gambling. Although not many gamblers use this term, some online casino players choose to say gaming instead of gambling because of the negative connotation that gambling had over the years. Participating in a game can actually mean that you’re participating in a casino game.

Action in online casino can mean several things. It can be the amount of money a player bets during one casino gambling session. It can also refer to the annual amount of play or casino deposits in a period of time specified by the casino management.

Another of those terms is the word all-in, which most gamblers nowadays are familiar with. The simple meaning is that a gambler is betting everything he’s left in a table. Some online casino players use the term all-in to imply that they are already broke or they are already exhausted after a day of gambling.

Online Gambling Causing Credit Card Debt

It is the latest craze at the moment and everyone seems to be enjoying gambling at home with the increase of poker sites on the internet, but its not good news if you are running up debts on your credit card. I don’t know about you but it seems that I have a misconceived perception of time when I am sitting at my computer; time just seems to fly by. The longer you are gambling on an internet poker site, the more money you are spending.

Online gambling is being seen as pushing up consumer debts and that’s not good for the UK economy. Figures from the government have revealed that the amount of money spent on gambling last year was £42.8 million; in 2001 that figure was only £8.6 million. It is a perturbing sharp increase. Internet sites that have been registered outside the UK have not been included in the government figures of money spent.

The glamorization of gambling, especially poker, by celebrities at the moment is partly to blame for the rise in gambling. Sitting at home on your computer can undermine your ability to spend your money wisely. Internet poker sites or casino sites allow you to insert your credit card details; once your details have been entered you can continue gambling up to your credit limit. Some gamblers are maxing out numerous credit cards at a time to try and win back money they have lost with the Debt Advisor group seeing some individual debts as high as £100,000. Casinos have a strong cash culture unlike internet gambling where it is your credit card that does the spending. Using cash instead of your credit card makes you more aware of the amount you are spending.

The growth of gambling online in the next five years is predicted to be around 22% a year while playing poker online is said to rise by 44% a year. Gambling through your mobile phone is now also being offered by companies which could see even higher debts being accumulated.

Gambling has always seen its fair share of creating debt problems but with easier accessibility it may cause more households to suffer from unmanageable debt. Other household members are usually unaware that there is a debt problem looming not realizing how much is actually being gambled, the more desperate people become to win back their money the higher the stakes become seeing people usually losing more and more.

If you are suffering form credit card debt problems through internet gambling there are many organizations that can help you. Seeking help sooner rather than later will prevent even more debt.
